Course Description: The 3D studio concentrates on the basics of three-dimensional design with an emphasis on spatial awareness, problem solving, concept, technique, and the many varieties of sculptural form. Topics include relief sculpture, special construction, form and mass, scale and context, structures, and kinetics. Presentations, critiques, and discussions promote dialog and allow students an opportunity to translate between visual, aural, and experiential methods of communicating about art and design.
Requirements: Sketchbook Portfolio - You will need to keep a sketchbook / journal for use in developing project ideas. Use the sketchbook in and out of class to document your entire design process for each project including brainstorms, concept maps, sketches, photos of models, and a photo of your end result. I will be reviewing these periodically, so I recommend not using a personal journal; keep a separate sketchbook for this class.
Attendance - Come to each class prepared and on time with all projects completed. Clean the studio at the end of each class. If you are late please bring donuts to the next class. 3 lates equal 1 absence. Each unexcused absence after the 3rd results in a full letter reduction on your final grade, with 7 absences yielding an auto E. Excused absences require a note from health services or student life, but I have the final say. If your cell phone rings during class, please call to have a pizza delivered, if you answer your phone, or are texting, you will be marked late for missing class time.
Respect - Respect the instructor, respect each other, and respect yourself. Listen when others are talking, and frame comments in a positive way. Make time to sleep.
Participation - Critiques, vocabulary, and discussion are a part of this course. Each student should participate vocally and visually in each class, providing constructive criticism to their peers, while demonstrating an ability to listen and receive it as well. If you have a disability, or develop a disability at some point during the semester, please meet with the Disabilities Resource Center and remember to file the appropriate paperwork with me. In addition to a mid-semester review, I will have a brief one on one meeting with each student scheduled closer to that time. These meetings are not graded, but serve as a way for you to let me know your concerns and me to inform you of you progress.
Email - Check your ASU email at least the day before each class, and the morning before each class. ASU email will be my chief way of communicating with you outside of class.
Blog - There will be a course blog / wiki / discussion board shortly. You will be required to make weekly entries, but the blog is more for you to share ideas and concerns with each other and the greater community than with me.

If a project is incomplete or you have an unexcused absence for a critique the work will still be reviewed, but at the next critique and the project will lose 2 points.
Presentation Grading:
Each student will be responsible for doing a presentation in association with one unit on a 3D Design topic. Topics will be chosen at random during the first week of class. The presentation should run for 20 - 30 minutes and include:
