In the arms of titans, in the grace of giants

UNIT V: Scale and Context

OBJECTIVE: To introduce the concepts of scale and proportion as applied to three-dimensional form. To explore issues of abstraction as related to material, scale, and context to introduce methods for moving easily between scales.

PROJECT: In the arms of titans, in the grace of giants - Inflatables

PROCESS:

  1. In groups of 4, brainstorm ideas for your installation. Consider the sculpture's relationship to the site, physically and contextually. Write everything down.
  2. Make sketches and paper mock-ups of a few ideas from your brainstorm using flat shapes taped together.
  3. Make two ¼ scale models of your installation considering how it will go together and slight variations. Each group will get 4 sheets of 9’ by 12’ polyethylene. Keep this in mind when determining the size and number of your sculpture’s shapes.
  4. Make ¼ scale templates from your model of each flat piece needed to make the sculpture.
  5. Cut the full scale pieces out of polyethylene
  6. Assemble the full-scale pieces.
  7. Inflate the sculpture on site using a high volume fan.
