Throw your arms to the sky, and do not fear where they may land

UNIT 1V: Mass and Form

OBJECTIVE: To introduce both traditional and non-traditional approaches to the concept of mass as applied to three-dimensional form.

PROJECT: Throw your arms to the sky, and do not fear where they may land

PROCESS:

  1. Using your rock and a feather, sketch support structures that utilize linear elements for each. The goal is to make the rock look light and the feather look heavy.
  2. Build a support structure for your rock using 1/8” x 1/8” basswood. The structure should make the rock look light, elevate the rock 5 times its height off the ground, and consider balance.
  3. Build a structure for your feather to make it seem impossibly heavy, also using basswood.
