We fly on leaves of frost: Open curriculum development

So, I figured I'd let the blog devotees in on the secrets of the next project, since most of you are also the ones on the discussion boards. I noticed in the forum on chapter 15 that there was some interest in doing a book arts project, which was the tie breaker in the clothing vs. book vote. I have some ideas on how the project could go, but I wanted to get your input as to whether there were specific ideas you had for how you would present or structure a book art project, what you would like to come out of it with, and if there were particular skills or techniques you would like to learn. The two traditional ways to approach a project like this are either modifying old used books or bookbinding, both of which I have a few years of experience in. So let me know your thoughts.

  2. Modifying old used books sounds intriguing. :)

P.S. Thanks for sharing the secret!

  3. I would like to work with modifying an old book. Altered books are a great way to reuse and give a new life to an old book. If you think about it-it kind of fits with the sustainability-recycle theme. It would be cool to have to add a secret door or compartment element to the book, and have more freedom to create a book that fits the artist's personality- make it personal. I too appreciate letting us have a peek into the next project and add our ideas into the mix. Thank you.

  4. I guess I'm in the minority, but I'd like to work with bookbinding/creating a new book. Handmade books are really cool to me.

  5. I think I'm with Luke on this one. Creating a whole new book sounds like it might be more difficult, but i think it would be worth it, plus I think it would be useful to learn new skills as I've never had much experience with bookbinding.

Dissecting a book sounds interesting too though.

  7. If we do book binding...I would really like an actual demonstration on the process and not a "learn as you go" approach. I don't want to spend all our energy on the binding and be exhausted of energy and ideas for the interior of the book. I would like to see actual work put into the books expressing the individual emotions, thoughts, artistic approaches to the pages. It would be an interesting critique. Altered books can really be powerful.
