Chinese Altars by Laura Marks
Many of Chinese ancestry keep spirit houses or shrines in their homes and shops. These function like Thai spirit houses to protect the dwellers and bring good luck. Chinese spirit houses, called Ti Ju Eia, are painted red with gold decorations. They usually are lighted with a small light bulb. The Ti Ju Eia contain a figure of a Chinese god dressed in traditional clothing, or an ancestor. Some contain a hero figure of a young man waving a sword to fight away evil spirits. He also holds a bag of money to attract wealth. Thai people of Chinese ancestry worship the god of the earth, as well.
