The May Pole
This ritual is based on a pagan tradition. The pole represents the male aspect of fertility and the wreath represents the female aspect of fertility. The ribbons are normally white and red to represent semen and blood. It is symbolic of the male and female aspect of divinity as they consummate their marriage every year on May 1st aka May Day, also in the Wiccan Calendar as Beltane.
In earlier traditions after the pole is wrapped in ribbon, you would look to see who was in front of you and that would be your partner for the night. Everyone would then run off to their own area of the forest and reenact the ritual for themselves. *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*...
