I can haz kitteh - Shop Drop (Political / Target brand)

Up until recently I was a Target shopper since they supported both LGBTQ employees as well as sponsoring events. However, a couple months ago Target gave 150,000 dollars to Tom Emmer, a Minnesota Republican and gubernatorial candidate who is openly anti-gay, and who has also contributed money to a christian rockband that is known for speak harshly of gays.

The CEO of Target Steinhafel is quoted in the ABC news article (click here) as saying. "Target has a history of supporting organizations and candidates, on both sides of the aisle, who seek to advance policies aligned with our business objectives, such as job creation and economic growth". Supporting LGBTQ employees, and then funding a huge anti-gay candidate doesn’t send the message of being neutral. ABC News interviewed a previous loyal Target customer, Randi Reitan, who created a youtube video in protest. In the interview, she declared "They can't take the money back now but at least they could give a matching amount to a [gay rights group]." I couldn’t agree with her more.

This is why I decided to modify the Target brand (up&up) to reveal their anti-gay political support. I chose disinfecting wipes because they reminded me of the way Target has wiped away gay support. First I removed the label, scanned it, altered it in fireworks. I then printed it on a 8x10 sticky label and adhered it to the container. The most noticeable change was made to label name, from “disinfecting wipes“ to “anti-gay wipes“. Other alterations included an addition to the list of items below the product name and text on the back of the label relating to how the product can wipe away the gay agenda and disinfect gay propaganda.
