Multiples Apparel

The dress below is a very common style, but it is made entirely of baby diapers.
This wedding dress is a similar style, the ruffle style is used quite often in wedding dresses.

Apparel/Fashion from Multiples

This dress, by Nancy Judd, courtesy of Recycle Runway, is made of hundreds of folded items of junk mail. More images can be seen here: http://www.recyclerunway.com/pages/PFJunkMail1.htm

And here's a similar style, here pictured on Miley Cyrus at the Oscars.

the second reminds me of those puffy jacket things (which are totally 2002, duh)

and the third makes me think of an 80's shoulder padded womens power pants suit.

Multiples in Fashion

Dress Made of Hundreds of Hello Kitty Plush Toys
Plush Bath Robe/Dress with Hello Kitty Pattern
The more practical dress/robe is very similar to the dress worn by Lady Gaga because they are both very plush and covered in Hello Kitty designs.

So i modified a NyQuil package because i think that many people who use it like the way they feel better than how they sleep. Countless drugs are bought by people looking to get high from the "side effects" of drugs. The inserted text also indicates that drug companies know of the strange side effects of their drugs but simply dont care. As long as they are making a profit they don't really care about the wellbeing of the consumer. I did this in the POD, a store in the MU because i wanted it to be seen by mostly college students and make them think about what's really in the medications they use.

"I Kan Haz Kittah" project: Bakugan

For my choice of "I Kan Haz Kittah" project relates to a game called "Bakugan" that relates to the already existing games of the two, Pokemon and Yugioh! At first glance at this product I find it to be a rip off of the two I stated by the appereance and the game play. The green ball figure which Imodified it to make it look like a pokeball or one of the pokemon monster and for the cards to be Yugioh style simply by removing the image of the actual card itself and replaceing it with a yugioh card in its place. My point in this is to show how creative people can even look at other exsisting games take apart some of its materials and used it to make their own game.
It was fun modifying this project, can't wait to see the buyers face when he/she purchase this.

I can haz Kitteh - Yi Zhu

This modification was mostly to show the unhealthy lifestyle (particularly in the diet / consumption department) of an average American. One of the most common issues with obesity as well as diabetes is caused by sugary foods / drinks such as coke. Although it is advertised as some refreshing beverage the reality of it is Soda such as these contain copious amounts of sugar, flavoring and little else. To illustrate this as literally as possible I purchased a bottle of soda and tried to show the consumer what they are actually purchasing (Though admittedly Coke uses high fructose corn syrup and not cane sugar since it is by far cheaper); a bottle of sugar and water.

My project is composed of an apple that says fight hunger.
I chose to do this because one of my goals in life is to help those
in need. right now the number of hungry people is increasing do
to the economy and people loosing their jobs. I believe that there should
be more food banks and homles shelters. the apple was chosen because it
is the most consumed fruit, and i carved the frace "Fight Hunger" to get my message across along with the delicious bite at the top. "Fight Hunger" is my way of saying lets win the hunger war and help out. Some people take food for granted with out thinking about the millions
of homless famillies that would do anything to take a bite out of a red, juicy, delicious apple.

I can haz kitteh - Shop Drop (Political / Target brand)

Up until recently I was a Target shopper since they supported both LGBTQ employees as well as sponsoring events. However, a couple months ago Target gave 150,000 dollars to Tom Emmer, a Minnesota Republican and gubernatorial candidate who is openly anti-gay, and who has also contributed money to a christian rockband that is known for speak harshly of gays.

The CEO of Target Steinhafel is quoted in the ABC news article (click here) as saying. "Target has a history of supporting organizations and candidates, on both sides of the aisle, who seek to advance policies aligned with our business objectives, such as job creation and economic growth". Supporting LGBTQ employees, and then funding a huge anti-gay candidate doesn’t send the message of being neutral. ABC News interviewed a previous loyal Target customer, Randi Reitan, who created a youtube video in protest. In the interview, she declared "They can't take the money back now but at least they could give a matching amount to a [gay rights group]." I couldn’t agree with her more.

This is why I decided to modify the Target brand (up&up) to reveal their anti-gay political support. I chose disinfecting wipes because they reminded me of the way Target has wiped away gay support. First I removed the label, scanned it, altered it in fireworks. I then printed it on a 8x10 sticky label and adhered it to the container. The most noticeable change was made to label name, from “disinfecting wipes“ to “anti-gay wipes“. Other alterations included an addition to the list of items below the product name and text on the back of the label relating to how the product can wipe away the gay agenda and disinfect gay propaganda.

My Finger Discount

This is the My Finger Discount!!

So all my life I've been messing up common phrases. Often times I embarrass myself with my malapropisms!! One saying that I messed up alot in my childhood was the "five finger discount" but I always called it the "my finger discount" so in representation of my wordy blunders I traced my hand on a shirt that represents stolen artifacts. "Back in the day" aka high school, I used to have a little problem with shop lifting and this summer I got caught from some dumb secret shopper lady! Since then I've been to terrified to steal anything!! The point is that its not worth it and in the end you always get caught! By me returning this shirt to target is a symbol of all other things I have stolen being returned to the store I took them from. I messed up the "five finger discount" literally be making it the "my finger discount" and getting caught.

I was looking around on the internet and found out that, a lot of air fresheners are actaully not that great for the air. They give off a lot of chemicals to make the smells they give off, even though they act like their very natural and clean. I went to a local store and found one, picked it up and and decided to leave a message for someone that may end up buying the toxic product. I wrote "you messed up" since they shouldn't have bought it.

I can haz Kitteh - Kyle Parsons

For the longest time, I have hated tabloid magazines. I think they are a disgrace and do nothing but put people down. Not only do the readers wish they were something they aren't, but the magazines also intrude on celebrities lives and spread unwanted rumors. I strongly believe these magazines are a waste of time, money, and self-esteem. I bought a People magazine and put a clear message on the second page to let people know what they are buying is stupid.

I forgot to take a picture of the original doll before altering it and at Target, I got the last doll but this is how a normal bratz doll looks like.

Side angle to show the alterations.

Doll inside the box

At first I was planning on taking a mechanical dog and shave off the fur so I could say something about animal abuse, but since those were 50 dollars each, I did my second idea. I altered a bratz doll to show the real teenager sort of thing. I made the doll pregnant and smoking. It even comes with her own pack of cigarettes and a bottle of beer. The reason my I chose the bratz doll was because it seemed like the most stereotypical teenage girl, or what other people think a teenager idealy would look like. I changed it to pregnant because this is was some teenage girls go through; many people don't choose not to think about that. I also made her smoking and drinking because these children are having children; I feel like these young mothers wouldn't know right from wrong since they are still learning how to take care of themselves. I feel like did this approach so stereotypical, having only one view of the pregnant teenager but I think this idea has been over looked.
I made the belly out of a piece of balloon and just stuffed it with balloon and some parts of a plastic bag. There are stretch marks, made by marker. The pack of cigarettes is made out of paper; the beer bottle is of pipe cleaners. I also cut her hair, to make her a little gross looking. I cut off her arm and re-attached it so it can look like a real pregnant girl, grasping her belly for stirdiness. I gave her tattoos on her chest and ankle to make her more ordinary. I have also altered the box. The motto for the Bratz line states: Girls with a Passion for Fashion. I made somewhat of a new line: Introducing: the NEW Passion for Fashion, suggesting there will be new models of the dolls. On the side of the box, I stated what also comes with the doll, accessories: Including: Cigarettes and Beer Bottle, printed on a cut out heart, to just seem like this maker would make it girly.

ShopDrop - Styrofoam Cups

For my project, I purchased a package of disposable Styrofoam cups from Safeway and wrote messages against using such a disposable product on them with a sharpie. Then I packaged them back up in such a way that the consumer will not know that they are buying an altered product until they get home and open them.

I chose to do this at Safeway because I felt this would be one of the most likely
places someone would buy such cups for personal use at home (rather, not where a coffee shop would buy them). These cups are also commonly used in offices--several breakrooms in places that I 've worked have provided these cups...almost as if they're encouraging employees to be wasteful. Safeway seemed like a likely place for them to purchase the cups as well.

I hope that after these are purchased, they bring to light how wasteful their purchaser is being, and instigate a change to a more reusable, sustainable product.

Shop Dropping

I have a friend who is a very outspoken, strong advocate for LGBT rights. Our conversations always seem to stem from these issues and then always seem to conclude with the idea that social norms should be broken down for the betterment of our society. This weekend, we were talking about what defines people as being gay or straight, which led to degrees of gayness or straightness. These degrees made it seem like unless someone is in the act with their sexual preference, they should not be firmly labeled as gay or straight. Playing with this, I thought about different ways "straight" people could be doing "gay" things (like a boy wearing a pink dress etc.). So for this assignment I gave a man overly-feminine hair, which I hope doesn't label his sexual preference, but just shows that he's a man with long, voluminous, blow-dried hair.

Over the weekend I overheard a woman talking about her age. She said that she felt that she could not compete with the younger women that are in her career field. Come to find out, this woman was a lawyer. I thought it was insane that she felt she couldn't compete with someone who was younger and has less experience than her. This was not the first time that I have heard a woman complain about her age. Many middle aged women feel that they should resemble a celebrity or someone twenty years their youth. Some feel like they will be taken more seriously if they look younger. Well, that is not the case. For my project, I decided that I wanted to put a twist on the beloved skin firming cream, "the magic in a jar." I added a 'before' and 'after' picture on the side of the jar. Some people think that they'll be transformed once they use the product. They want the best possible results. I also cut out the label that said directions. I added a statement that says "What have we women com o? Do we really believe that nothing we have achieved counts unless we look at least 20 years younger than our real age? Wrinkles? No. These are lines of character." I did not make any changes to the box/packaging because I wanted it to look like all of the other items. The changes were made to the jar so that the customer would see it once they already purchased the item.
